Why You Should Purchase PIP and UM Auto Insurance Coverage

If you have not recently reviewed what type of automobile insurance coverage you have on your automobile policy, now is a great time to check to make sure not only that you have adequate liability coverage in the unforunate event that you cause an automobile accident and injure someone, but also to protect yourself and your family members by ensuring that you have adequate Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage ("UM") and Personal Injury Protection Coverage ("PIP") in the event that another driver causes a car accident and you or your family members are injured.

Dallas County, Texas has one of the largest percentages of uninsured motor vehicle drivers in the State of Texas at almost 15 percent.  This number is much better than one year ago when the percentage of uninsured drivers in Dallas County, Texas was 24 percent, but it is still too high.  Factor in the number of drivers who carry the minimum amount of liability coverage and a much larger percentage of drivers are not adequately insured to cover someone's damages who suffers serious personal injury due to a motor vehicle accident.

Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage

You should look at your automobile insurance policy and make sure that you carry Uninsured Motorist Coverage and Underinsured Motorist Coverage.  Uninsured motorist coverage provides insurance coverage to you if you suffer personal injury due to the fault of a driver who does not have insurance.  If you are hit by an uninsured motorist and you suffer serious bodily injury, your uninsured motorist coverage may be the only way to obtain compensation for your damages.

Underinsured motorist coverage provides coverage to you for personal injury caused by the fault of another driver who does not have an adequate amount of insurance to cover your damages associated with your injuries.  For example, if your claim for personal injury damages would exceed the full policy limit of coverage that the adverse driver carries on his automobile insurance policy, then your own automobile insurance carrier becomes responsible to pay for some of your damages if you carry Underinsured Motorist Coverage.

If you need to file a claim for Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist Coverage, I strongly advise you to hire an experienced personal injury lawyer to represent you with respect to the claim.  Without an experienced attorney to assist you, many insurance companies attempt to underpay these claims and some flat out deny such claims.  If you have suffered serious personal injury in an automobile accident, you need to hire an experienced attorney to assist you, such as an attorney who is Board Certified in Personal Injury Trial Law.

Personal Injury Protection Coverage

You should also carry Personal Injury Protection Coverage on your automobile insurance policy.  Such coverage is paid by your insurance carrier in the event that you are injured in an automobile accident to help you pay for some of your medical bills.  The cost of the coverage is generally not very expensive and I have seen the amount of coverage generally at $2,500, $5,000, or $10,000.

UM Coverage and PIP Coverage are very valuable to protect you and your family in the tragic circumstance involving an automobile accident.  If you do not carry the coverage, I would recommend that you call your automobile insurance carrier today and ask for premium quotes to add the coverage to your policy and obtain quotes for the various dollar amounts your carrier sells for each coverage.  If you or your family members suffer serious personal injury due to an automobile accident in Dallas County, Texas, you will be glad you have the coverage.
