Two Killed in Corpus Christi Motorcycle Accident

A tragic motorcycle accident occurred on Saratoga Blvd in front of the HEB Plus on March 29, 2015.  Police investigation of the facts of the crash indicate that a driver of a minivan attempted to cross multiple lanes of traffic on Saratoga Blvd to make a u-turn and did not see the oncoming motorcycle which was traveling in the center lane of Saratgoa Blvd in front of Huntington Square.

The driver of the motorcycle, Wayne Fowler, lost control of the bike as he attempted to avoid colliding with the minivan and suffered serious head injuries as a result of the crash, despite the fact that he was wearing his helmet at the time. He was treated in intensive care at Christus Spohn hospital for the next two weeks but unfortunately died of his injuries late Thursday night.

The passenger of the motorcycle, Lorraine Villarreal, also suffered serious head injuries as a result of the motorcycle crash and died a day after the accident.  She was 25 years old.

Hearing news like this is scary...I personally drive at this location almost every day.  It certainly makes you realize how valuable your life truly is.  My purpose in sharing this news is to increase awareness and to hopefully increase safety on our roadways.

Helmets Save Lives for Motorcycle Riders in Texas and the Nation

Riding a motorcycle on the open highway in Texas is an unbelievable experience, yet, safety is paramount.  Per mile traveled in 2007, motorcyclists were about 37 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a traffic crash and 9 times more likely to be injured, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).  Statistics have clearly shown that wearing a helmet simply saves lives in the event of a motorcycle accident.

In 2008, approximately 5,290 motocyclists were killed and 96,000 were injured in the United States.  According to the NHTSA, head injury is the leading cause of death in motorcycle crashes and an unhelmeted motorcyclist is 40 times more likely to suffer a fatal head injury than a helmeted motorcyclist.  "The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that helmets saved 1,829 motocyclists' lives in 2008 and that 823 more could have been saved if all motorcyclists had worn helmets."  NHTSA Traffic Safety Facts: Motorcycles 2008 Data; NHTSA Traffic Safety Facts:  Motorcycle Helmet Use Laws 2004.
